Dearest GodDaughter,
Remember I told you I wanted to send you this article for a long time. Finally sending it today.
All successful students had questions to the teacher, but never questioned the teacher.
It’s a common sight in Chennai and its suburbs to watch passengers in electric trains sit near the entrance with their legs let loose – hanging outside, and travel. It was one such occasion when one of my friends was sitting like that – with his legs hanging outside in a speeding train. All of a sudden, his friend who was standing next to him screamed, “Lift your legs.” Instantaneously my friend’s legs went up, only to realise that his legs were hanging in the air, above a newly constructed platform. If only my friend, before lifting his legs, had asked, “Why?” his very life would have been a question mark. Leave alone asking; he couldn’t have entertained even a thought. When I heard about this for the first time it was just a narration. Little did I realise that it will impact my life so much later.
The fact is that there is a great pay-off for unquestioned surrender and I think that is probably the implied lesson taught to us in maths. I vividly remember what my maths teacher taught us about axioms and theorems:
Axiom: It cannot be proved, but you can’t proceed with maths if you don’t accept it without questioning.
Theorem: A few steps can help you in proving LHS = RHS. But if unconditional acceptance of Axioms does not happen, happy solving of theorems also does not happen.
Though I did not understand axioms and theorems in maths then, I understood what it implies in life today. Chapter 18, verse 66 of the Bhagavat Gita says, “If you surrender unto me, I will liberate you.” “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you,” says Bible. In simple terms, don’t ask unnecessary questions.
I know you wish to ask me, “Are you telling me we should not question at all?” Ask questions on the conviction, but do not question the conviction. Please question to seek clarity and not to contradict intentions. Don’t question axioms; there is no point.
All of us remember our rhymes so easily because we learnt them without questioning. All successful students had questions to the teacher, but never questioned the teacher.
The meaning of the word guru is GU: Meaning darkness, and RU: Meaning light. The guru is the one who liberates you from darkness to light. When there is so much darkness in your life, just follow the light called ‘Guru’, for he will show the way. Don’t tell him to turn your way; you may not reach the destination.
Fix your axioms in life. Derive your theorems and you will truly understand.
Guru Brahma (He is the creator) Guru Vishnu (He is the Protector) Guru Devo Maheswaraha (He is the destroyer of all evil)
I am glad I have identified the axioms and theorems in my life. I would be very glad if this implied message of maths works well in your life too.
